Your Creativity is Without Comparison

Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life. Galatians 6:4-5 The Message

I’m not creative. It's just not my gift.
I don’t have it, I don’t have any creativity.

I get it. I’ve heard it at least a hundred times. I’ve also heard, I’m not creative enough. I could never think of something like that!

I totally get it but here’s the funny thing and it’s one of those things that I love. You are a creative person. You have been CREATED to be creative. It's just who you are. Your DNA.

Maybe you know you’re a creative and you totally embrace it. But you have this sneaking feeling you should be MORE creative. Far more creative than you believe you are.

The secret… no, not that one-

This is the secret though. You’ll never be any more creative than you are right now. You are as creative as you’re ever going to be. You have a multitude of creativity.

The reason we don’t get it. The reason we think we’re missing out on more creativity is a thing called comparison.

We think to ourselves, I’m not as creative as that person, or I’m not REALLY creative. Maybe you were told when you were a child that you weren’t creative. Creativity just isn’t your thing.

Surprise!!!

You’re as creative, right now, as you’re ever going to be. You have a plethora of creativity. You just don’t know it.

This is what happens. We start doing something. We think it’s interesting or fun or different or we jump out there and try something new. Maybe that something still feels kinda safe even.

And then, we compare ourselves to someone else or to an idea, or it didn’t turn out the way we wanted. It doesn’t look the way we wanted it to or doesn’t look the way we expected. So, based solely on this one attempt, we decide we’re not creative.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Theodore Roosevelt

That just means it didn’t turn out the way we wanted or it didn’t meet our immediate expectations.

Spoiler alert- The first attempt at anything rarely meets expectations.

This does not mean you’re not creative. If you never try or you stop trying after one go at it, you’ll never discover just how creative God made you. That’s the other funny thing about this. So, here’s the deal.

It’s a scavenger hunt

You’re never going to be any more creative than you are right now. You are born creative. You won’t ever have any more creativity than you have now.

What you will do is discover every facet of creativity you have within yourself. It’s like an incredible life-long scavenger hunt. You go on this insanely wild, creative scavenger hunt to discover who you are and the creative endeavors God put you on this earth to bring to life.

That’s what creativity is, it’s you. You are creativity. You just haven’t discovered the depth of it. You haven’t discovered how amazing you are as a creative being, how amazing you are at creativity. You haven’t explored the things that make you, you!

Finding Nemo/creativity

Maybe your creativity isn’t canvas and paint. Maybe it’s dirt. Maybe you’re great at landscaping. Maybe you are passionate and obsessed with landscaping. Growing things and moving rocks around makes your heart sing.

Maybe from playing in the dirt and planting, you discover you also like arranging flowers! You’re seeing things differently, you’re changing your perspective.

Maybe your creativity is the written word. You like to write, you resonate with the feel of the pen dancing across the page but maybe it’s not writing stories.

What if it’s hand lettering or you have a thing for writing a beautiful grocery list? Writing your to-do list, creating in your journal…

That’s creativity. So, the idea of not being creative or maybe I can be more creative is not actually true.

The trick is to find one thing, just one that you like. Just one thing to start. A thing you want to experience and play at.

So, do it. Just do it. Don’t judge it. Don’t think about it. Don’t hesitate, jump into it. Don’t listen to the “I can’t do this” voices in your head. Just do it. Just do it and then, do it again and then explore further.

Is there a book you can read? Is there a short on YouTube you can view? Maybe there’s a video you can watch. Is there anything that would show you a little more about this thing you want to do?

That’s not how you become creative. That’s how you tap into your creativity. And the more you tap into your creativity the more creativity you discover you already possess.

It’s who you are, not who you know

That’s when you find out you don’t have to have more creativity. You just need to use what you have. This is one of those things, you don’t need to be any more creative than you already are.!

You are born full-on creative. Creativity is who you are. It’s by exploring, jumping in headfirst, seeing what you can do, how you can do it, and finding the things that go with it that allow you to recognize your abundant creative self.

That’s what begins opening the doorway to discovering how creative you really are.

What if you really are that creative? What if your creativity is through the roof? How cool would that be?
